Get Your Interview Mojo Going

Posted by in Career Advice

The best way to ace an interview is with energy. Hiring managers across the board are more receptive to potential employees that show a passion to obtain the position.

Sometimes it’s hard to start that spark when you’ve been on unemployment for an extended stretch. Don’t be done before you’ve begun, psych yourself up. Here are 6 quick tips you can use while sitting in your car before an interview to amp your enthusiasm.

  1. Sing out loud – Find a song or several that get your spirits pumping and crank up the tunes. Sing your heart out and your heart rate will increase. It will boost your mood and your chances of scoring high on the positive energy meter. Pick a happy upbeat song though. I’m partial to Joan Jett’s punk version of the Mary Tyler Moore theme song Love Is All Around, myself. Feel free to toss your hat in the air afterwards.

  2. Play a game – A quick game you’re good at whether it’s Angry Birds or Tetris will get your brain going. Make sure you can get to a level where you feel like you’re winning and take that buzz into the interview with you.

  3. Sweet treat – Unless you’re diabetic a quick sugar high probably won’t hurt. Out of all the snacks to grab though a banana is probably best. The vitamin packed fruit will give you as much energy as a cup of coffee only without the jitters of having a second cup.

  4. Phone a friend – Find someone who can be a “build me up buddy.” Whether it’s your best friend, your mom, a sibling or a spouse, take a minute to make a quick call so they can remind you that “you’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and gosh-darnit, people like you”.

  5. Pop a shot – Most cell phones have built in cameras so snap a quick picture of yourself before heading in. Putting the moment in a life changing perspective is more likely to make it that way. When you get the job offer you can follow up with a before and after picture for your Facebook.

  6. Say a prayer – Check in with your higher power to get a quick affirmation on your calling.
